Something Fishy’s Going On!
Holoholo has partnered up with Local I‘a, a community supported fishery (CSF) program, to add a fishy option to your regular Holoholo CSA subscription!
For just $26, you’ll get a 1.5 pound share of the catch of the week. Local I‘a works with Hawai‘i fishermen (and women!) to bring you fresh, responsibly caught seafood. Each delivery also includes a special code that lets you learn more about the fish species, who harvested it, how it was harvested and where it was caught.
Local I‘a provides a high-quality product that is harvested through environmentally responsible and ethical practices, as encompassed in their Pono Fishing Standard, which incorporates indigenous Hawaiian fishing practices with the principles of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the globally recognized industry standard for environmentally sustainable seafood, together with social principles for ethically sourced food. These are the core elements of the Pono Fishing Standard:
- Our seafood is sourced from healthy stocks, and our fishermen fish in ways that allow populations to replenish themselves.
- Our fishermen take care of the resource, and minimize the impact of their fishing activities on the environment. Our fishermen adhere to state and federal fishing regulations and are active participants in improving management systems
- Our fishermen uphold standards for ethical sourcing, including fair and equitable employment, transparency of point-of-origin, and adherence to cultural norms and practices
By purchasing fish shares from Local I‘a, you’ll be supporting folks like Captain Jared Dow (right, with his wife, Saya) who first started fishing in Hawaii in 1997. “I’ll never forget that day,” he says. “I grew up fishing but this was so different. Such big, colorful and tasty fish. The way I was taught is pretty much how I do it today. Catch the fish as quickly as possible to not stress and burn the meat, bleed it, gut it and ice it down. I love eating fish every which way and it’s my life. Mahalo for enjoying the fish I caught!”
As Local I‘a says: Fresh. Local. Pono. And, we might add, delicious!
